CHILDREN'S AUTHOR VISITS WEST MILFORD
Children’s
author Bruce Coville visited West Milford Elementary on Wednesday, April
18. His visit had been eagerly anticipated by our students, who had
read or listened to his stories. He gave three performances and
autographed several stacks of books.
Bruce Coville is the author of nearly ninety books for young readers, including
the international best-seller My Teacher Is an Alien. He has been a
teacher, a toy maker, a cookware salesman, and a grave digger. In addition
to his work as an author, Mr. Coville is much in demand as a speaker and
as a storyteller.
During his performances, he detailed the creation of a book from the beginning
of the idea until the time the manuscript is sold to a publisher. With kindergarten
and fist grade students, he focused his talk around The Foolish Giant, his
first picture book. For the older students, he used The Monster's Ring.
Mr. Coville’s presentations addressed questions of creativity, where ideas
come from, and issues regarding editing and rewriting. Students and
teachers agreed that his performance also had plenty of humor!
West Milford Food Drive
The West
Milford Lions in conjunction with West Milford Elementary School held a food
drive in order to provide food baskets for community residents. The
school held a contest. Class winners were Mrs. Reich's second grade
on the primary level and Mrs. Lear's class on the intermediate level. Each
class was presented a thirty dollar gift certificate and milk and cookies.
Mrs. Reich's class chose to spend their thirty dollars to purchase more
food for the community. Individual student winners who collected the
most food were Cassidy in second grade and Sammi in third grade. They
were each awarded a twenty dollar gift certificate. Pictured are members of
the West Milford Lions, including our principal, Mrs. Griffith, along with
Mrs. Reich and our two student winners.
